The Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization that supports the Wikimedia Movement - including MediaWiki - recently announced a reorganization of their engineering team. This is an interesting development and will hopefully have a positive impact on the development and release of future version of MediaWiki.

The whole FAQ is well worth the read and provides a great amount of transparency into their decision making process. A few notes of import.

New Teams

There will be 6 teams focused around the following.

  • Community Tech
  • Editing
  • Reading
  • Search & Discovery
  • Fundraising Tech
  • Infrastructure

New CTO

The foundation is also creating a new Chief Technical Officer (CTO) role. In the past the foundation had a CTO who was focused on technical issues. This new CTO position is different in it's focus and scope.

This new CTO role will oversee the following functions. These functions are across all the teams. [1]

  • Research
  • Architecture
  • Performance
  • Privacy
  • Security
  • User Experience (UX)
