The Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization that supports the Wikimedia Movement - including MediaWiki - recently announced a reorganization of their engineering team. This is an interesting development and will hopefully have a positive impact on the development and release of future version of MediaWiki.
The whole FAQ is well worth the read and provides a great amount of transparency into their decision making process. A few notes of import.
New Teams
There will be 6 teams focused around the following.
- Community Tech
- Editing
- Reading
- Search & Discovery
- Fundraising Tech
- Infrastructure
New CTO
The foundation is also creating a new Chief Technical Officer (CTO) role. In the past the foundation had a CTO who was focused on technical issues.
This new CTO role will oversee the following functions. These functions are across all the teams. [1]
