It's a very popular extension in third-party wikis as it allows for organizations to use their existing authentication systems to manage their MediaWiki wikis. 

Instead of having to create Yet Another Account to use an internal wiki, at my employer we use this extension to authenticate against our Active Directory. Co-workers can use the same account they're familiar with elsewhere within the organization and we don't have to ask folks to create accounts before contributing.
