Die Downloads von MediaWiki-Erweiterung zeigt zum einen, welche Erweiterungen von allen benötigt werden. Die erstgenannten könnten eventuell auch Teil des Cores sein. Geht man die Liste entlang finden sich aber auch viele Erweiterungen, die auf einen starken Einsatz in Unternehmen und Organisationen hinweisen.

Wiki ist als Lösung populärer als Blogs, doch bei Wikis hat nach den Suchanfragen ein proprietäres System längst die Führung in der Wahrnehmung und als Lösungsansatz übernommen. Im MediaWiki-Umfeld sind SMW und BlueSpice die zentralen Wettbewerber gegenüber Confluence. Ursache ist, dass MediaWiki kein Ecosystem für Freelancer, Non-Profit und For-Profit-Unternehmen besitzt.
